QUEENSLAND Health has closed the swine flu clinic at the old Oaks nursing home at Warwick Hospital following what the department called a “marked reduction in presentations”.

A spokesman said the clinic, which opened last Thursday, had served its purpose and had taken the strain off other health services.

He said 68 people attended the clinic on Thursday with the number dropping to 34 on Friday, 14 on Saturday and eight on Sunday.

“Any decision to re-open the clinic will be dependant on demand,” the spokesman said.

“People in the Warwick area who have any concerns about flu-type symptoms should call 13Health (13 432584), contact their GP or visit the emergency section of the Warwick Hospital.

“It is a good idea to ring ahead if you are visiting a surgery or emergency department with flu symptoms.”

For both seasonal and swine influenza (H1N1), Queensland Health advises the best way to protect yourself and others is to:

• Stay at home when sick.

• Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand gel; wash hands before touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with disposable tissues; dispose of immediately.

• Don't share such items as cigarettes, glasses or cups, lipstick, toys or anything which could be contaminated with respiratory secretions.

• Maintain at least one metre distance from people who have flu-like symptoms, eg coughing or sneezing.
